Full Interview: • The Challenges & Triumphs of Building a So... Greenville Triumph & Liberty new stadium plan: https://www.greenvilletriumph.com/new... Ronaldinho Joins Greenville Triumph and Liberty Ownership Group: https://www.greenvilletriumph.com/new... Greenville, South Carolina and pro soccer. It’s not quite peanut butter and jelly or even iced tea and diabetes inducing amounts of sugar. Yet there is one group here who believes it can work. What started as a simple hashtag…#usl2gvl and an online movement to bring a team to this part of America. Those efforts have blossomed into a USL-1 championship-winning side in the Greenville Triumph SC, a women’s USLW club, Greenville Liberty SC, and a new soccer-specific stadium that is under construction. All of this is happening within the footprint of not one but two MLS teams, Atlanta United and Charlotte FC. With US club soccer notorious for, how should we put this, bad actors. Those focused more on self-preservation than on what’s best for the sport, you’d be inclined to assume this would prove problematic to a team like the one in Greenville. On the contrary, soccer in the south isn’t necessarily viewed as a competition, at least off the pitch, but as camaraderie. A rising tide lifts all ships. The Greenville Triumph SC and Greenville Liberty have found success, in no small part, due to the presence of clubs in their own backyard, according to their Vice Chairman and Chief Branding Officer Doug Erwin. It also helps to have some legendary figures supporting the cause. Say, former players in the mold of John Harkes or Ronaldinho. We can start with the former. John Harkes was the club’s first coach. Having been in a similar situation as the boss of FC Cincinnati during their first few seasons, the former USMNT midfielder was instrumental in building a foundation for the Triumph. His impact was important on the pitch; Greenville hoisted the championship in 2020. However, his legacy just may be the standards he helped set for the entire club. Next up for the club is a new stadium. While Paladin Stadium has been a good home for the Triumph and Liberty these past few seasons, the club’s forever home will be better equipped for soccer and that’s something to look forward to. A 2022 plan saw renderings for the new stadium at the BridgeWay Station site being released, but those were shelved after funding fell through. Today, you won’t find any renderings or a timeline for the new stadium project. That doesn’t mean nothing is happening. The process Greenville has adopted differs from that of other professional sports teams trying to build a new stadium, which includes a three-part agreement between the team, developer, and government. Instead of getting the public excited about something that may look totally different from what’s delivered, the focus is on making sure all the I’s are dotted and t’s crossed.
