Strategic Affairs Distinguished Lecture Topic: " Guyana Venezuela Conflict" Date: Saturday, March 29th 2025 Time: 10.00 AM EST (Washington D.C.) | 7:30 PM IST (New Delhi) Distinguished Guest Ms. Bindu D. Maharaj Chair Dr. A. Adityanjee, President Council for Strategic Affairs The meeting discussed the history, disputes, and potential alliances of Guyana and Venezuela, with a focus on the ongoing territorial conflict in the Essequibo region and its implications. Guyana is located on the northern coast of South America and is considered a Caribbean country. The history of Guyana involves colonization by the Dutch, English, and British, with a frequent change of hands. Portuguese immigrants arrived in Guyana in 1834 and later Indian indentured laborers were imported to the country. Ghana gained independence in 1966 and has a history of disputes with Suriname and Venezuela over the Essequibo region. Ghana is rich in minerals and natural resources, including oil, but exploration has been hindered by conflicts and disputes. Ghana's oil discoveries have the potential to make it one of the world's largest offshore oil producers. Venezuela's economy is heavily dependent on oil, and its history is marked by political instability and economic challenges. Venezuela's President Maduro is trying to assert control over the disputed Essequibo region, rich in oil and gas reserves. The US under Trump's leadership has taken a firm stance against Venezuela's claims, vowing to protect Guyana's territorial integrity. The international Court of Justice is expected to rule on the dispute next year, but tensions are likely to escalate before then. The lecture was highly informative and educational, covering over 250 years of history to the present. The visit of Marco Rubio to the Caribbean region and his statement were discussed. President Ali faces challenges in gaining the support of Guyana's military forces. Diana should consider building alliances, including with India, to strengthen its defense capabilities. #guyana_venezuela_conflict #southamericanoil #geopolitics #guyana_oil #venezuela_oil #international_relations #councilforstrategicaffairs #csa #maduro #essequibo #marcorubio #dr_adityanjee #amb_kapoor
