Sondai Fort Trekking from Sondaiwadi Karjat I started my journey from the Borivali (Mumbai) early in the morning. Caught the 5:00 am Local for DADA station. From DADAR caught 05:59am Karjat Fast Local. Reached Karjat around 08:00 am. From Karjat station we reached the base village by Auto(350/- Charges for the entire auto) From the Base village(Sondaiwadi) it took around 45 minutes to 1 hr to reach the top of the hill. Sondai is a small fort, less of a fort and more of a watchtower. It’s a part of the Karjat or Matheran range of mountains. A less known Fort, the name of the fort is derived from the temple of Goddess Sondai at the top of the mountain. Sondewadi, the base village for the trek is a small hamlet of a few huts. Sondai fort offers a beautiful view of Morbe dam, Irshalgad & the Matheran range. It barely takes 60 minutes to reach the top of Sondai fort.Sondai fort lies at the end of the Matheran range, just beside the Morbe dam in Khalapur taluka Raigad, Maharashtra. If you reach the Karjat Railway station. No direct Bus is available from Karjat to Sondewadi but one can take any ST bus / Rickshaw from Karjat Station going towards Panvel/ Chouk / Rasayani which can drop you at Borgaon Phata for 10-15 Rs per seat ( 12 km). There is EECO which runs between Borgaon Phata to Ambewadi on an hourly basis which takes Rs 40 per seat. You can ask them to drop you near Sondewadi. In case vehicles are not available one can walk 5.5 km of the scenic road to Sondewadi enjoying the views of the huge Morbe Dam. Some of the views are from the top. The backwater of Morbe Dam and Vavarle Reservoir can be seen in clear weather. Climbing ladders are the most interesting part of this trek. These ladders are put up by villagers themselves. There is a small Sondai Devi idol. According to villagers, there is no mandir-like structure but the tree is the only mandir for the idols. Irshalgad at the distance can be seen , Matheran mountain range There are two base villages for Sondai fort. There are two routes for Sondai Fort from Wavarle & Sondewadi. From Sondewadi village From Vavarle village From Vavarle village Vavarle village is around 11-12 Km from Karjat station. it takes 2-3 hours to climb the fort, also it is more tiresome and tough than the second village route. From Sondewadi village Sondewadi village is 10 Km far from the Karjat station. It takes 45 minutes to climb the fort. Music by Yurii Kohut from Pixabay
