In this captivating TEDx talk at Mayoor School Ajmer, Pandit Tribhuwan Maharaj beautifully redefined Kathak—not merely as a classical dance form, but as a powerful tradition of storytelling. Rooted in the ancient saying “Katha kahe so Kathak” (one who tells a story is a Kathak), his talk traced the journey of Kathak from oral narratives to rhythmic movement, expressions, and grace. Pandit Tribhuwan Maharaj took the audience through the origin and historical evolution of Kathak, highlighting how stories were once told through movement. Introducing his lineage, he spoke about the Kalakbindan Lucknow Gharana, sharing its unique nuances, discipline, and aesthetic depth. What made the talk especially engaging was its interactive nature—from rhythmic counting exercises to demonstrating playful elements like Snakes and ladder, allowing students to experience Kathak not just as spectators but as participants. Through rhythm, footwork, and storytelling, the audience felt the living pulse of tradition. At its heart, the talk carried a strong message: to revive, respect, and reconnect with our own cultural roots. Pandit Tribhuwan Maharaj reminded young minds that Indian classical art forms are not outdated—they are timeless expressions of identity, history, and human emotion. This talk was not just a performance—it was a movement to reclaim tradition, one story at a time. Tribhuwan Maharaj, grandson of the legendary Pandit Birju Maharaj is a classical Kathak dancer from the prestigious Lucknow Gharana. Trained under his father and mentor, Pandit Jai Kishan Maharaj has performed extensively in India and internationally, bringing the elegance, precision, and expressiveness of Kathak to diverse audiences. Tribhuwan combines classical rigor with contemporary creativity, preserving the rich tradition of Kathak while making it accessible and inspiring for younger generations. Through his performances, he emphasizes storytelling, rhythm, and abhinaya (expression), keeping the art form vibrant and relevant today This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
