The Gradius Origins collection came out for the 40th anniversary of Gradius and it’s the latest of the highly regarded M2 developed arcade collections. This time encompassing the first three Gradius games, the two Salamander games and bundled with every possible revision under the sun, there is even a never-before seen arrange version of Gradius III! On top of it all, there is also a brand new Gradius game, the first one in 14 years! Ported with the utmost care and quality that only M2 is known for, this collection is easily the definitive version of these games now. Perfectly accurate to the arcade, very low input lag, fantastic practice options, leaderboards, downloadable replays, gadgets with extra information, a local 2 player co-op mode, bonus features and attention to detail that gives this an edge over anything else, official and unofficial. You can clearly see the passion these guys have for the games they port, going above and beyond with details and presentation. And who else to handle this legendary Konami series. Gradius is one of the most influential series of all time, the unique option-trailing gameplay and powerup system inspiring many a future dev. All of these games have aged incredibly good as well, which is a testament to their quality. Gradius 1 still plays great, and that is a game from freaking 1985. With advanced features like slowdown independent autofire and an advanced cube rush practice mode, this also makes these games more accessible than ever before. These games are infamously difficult, but they give you all the tools to tackle them and make the process of improving fun. ---- Salamander III is the brand new game for this collection. Similar to the Castlevania Dominus Collection, this one is also developed by M2 themselves. In some ways you can see this as a continuation of the old Rebirth series. Aesthetically Salamander III feels more like a throwback game to the first Salamander in specific, and you can almost see it as a remake of it. As such it takes a lot more after the first game than the sequel. But it does do its own thing to expand and modernize the existing formula by adding new mechanics and doing cool new things with existing set pieces and tropes. One of these new mechanics being the addition of a hyper system. Based on a cooldown, this hyper can be used at any time for extra firepower and differs for each weapon. Now hypers are nothing new, but what’s unique here is how it’s implemented in relation to the recovery system of Salamander. One of the main issues with Salamander was always that a bad death was usually an instant game over, but here the hypers give you much more of a fighting chance to recover and get powered back up. I think it’s a pretty brilliant solution. Besides hypers they also introduced a new powerup that lets you switch between normal options and snake options. This adds more variety and strategy to the game, and is quite unique for a Gradius game. Interestingly they also added the Jade Knight as a playable ship, which is a first for Salamander. It’s a pretty powerful ship as well, the round laser is especially good for destructible terrain as it just instantly deletes it. The Vic Viper and the Lord British feel pretty similar, I think the only difference between them is that the former has a better laser and the latter has a better ripple laser. Some more improvements are that speedups aren’t an issue anymore since max speed is manageable. Lives are more abundant as well, maybe too abundant as you can get over 20 lives per loop. On the other hand it’s really easy to chaindie so I assume they struck for a bit of a balance. The game loops infinitely as far as I can tell, but it’s one of those rare ones where each loop keeps getting significantly more harder. Loop 5 gets absolutely insane and I can’t even get past stage 1 in practice mode so far, it’s nuts. The loops are cool because they introduce new enemies and hazards, and the music gets switched up too. Something else I’ve noticed is that the screen scrolling seems to keep increasing for each loop, which is not something I’ve really seen before. It’s definitely a unique way to add to the challenge. Overall I think they did a good job with making a worthy successor. The game is a joy to play and it feels like a natural extension to Salamander. It looks and sounds very good as well.
