This lecture was recorded at the Von Hügel Institute for Critical Catholic Inquiry, St Edmund's College, University of Cambridge, on 24 February 2017. Most discussions of dialogue, consensus, disagreement and the like rest on an ideology of liberal pluralism. The paper will offer a critique of this ideology in general, and ask how agreement and disagreement appear in light of this. Professor Terry Eagleton FBA is an internationally celebrated literary scholar and cultural theorist, and currently Distinguished Professor of English Literature at Lancaster University. He was previously Thomas Wharton Professor of English Literature at the University of Oxford, and John Edward Taylor Professor of Cultural Theory at the University of Manchester. He has published over forty books, including the best-selling Literary Theory: An Introduction (Wiley- Blackwell, 1993), Ideology: An Introduction (Verso, 1991), Reason, Faith and Revolution: Reflections on the God Debate (Yale UP, 2010), and most recently Materialism (Yale UP, 2017).
