What does it mean to claim womanhood after living as a man? For many trans women, the world once treated us with unearned privilege, and now punishes us for living truthfully. But can someone who once was raised from male socialization with its supposed benefits truly exist as a woman feminist solidarity? In this episode of Whispers of Self, I explore what happens when womanhood begins after privilege, when trans women who once passed as men confront accusations of “male socialization,” authenticity, and belonging. We’ll unpack how that argument is weaponized by gender-critical voices like Helen Joyce, Matt Walsh, and J.K. Rowling — and counter it with insights from Judith Butler, Julia Serano, Zoé Samudzi, and other feminist thinkers. This isn’t just a debate about gender — it’s about who gets to define womanhood itself. You’ll hear stories of trans women navigating the loss of privilege, the shock of sexism, and the rediscovery of self. And we’ll ask: what if giving up power for truth is one of the most feminist acts of all? Whether you’re trans, feminist, or just questioning what womanhood means in a changing world, you are welcome here.
