After months of dominating the Atlantic, the German Battleship Gneisenau and her sister ship, Scharnhorst, had wreaked havoc on Allied shipping lanes. In Operation Berlin alone, these juggernauts sank or captured 22 ships, accounting for a staggering 115,622 tons of Allied cargo. The Royal Air Force now had them in their crosshairs, placing the Kriegsmarine in a precarious situation. With both ships moored in Brest, France, they were under relentless assault from the RAF, who were resolute in their mission to annihilate them. Simultaneously, the vital presence of the Scharnhorst-class battleships was needed in Nazi-occupied Norway to deter British commandos from further incursions.
