Only a breath separates our interpretation of famous literary figures and how these artists may have perceived themselves. This self-image is often quite different from contemporary assumptions. Anti-Communist writers throughout the Eastern Bloc and Russia represented a wide array of thoughts, values, and ideologies. There were reformed socialists, nationalists, Christian traditionalists, and even liberals of various persuasions. They may have shared a struggle against Communism, but that’s where it ended. Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn stands out as a man ahead of this time. A man who understood how identity, morality, and faith were the foundations of any future civilizational consideration. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1970 and lauded by many scholars in the West. That is, until he shared his truth with those who wanted to project their values upon him. In 1978, Solzhenitsyn received an honorary degree from Harvard University. On June 8, 1978 Solzhenitsyn gave a commencement address where he condemned the media, the decline of spiritual and traditional values, and the Anthropocentrism of Western culture. When Solzhenitsyn speaks of the West, we must understand this as a condemnation of the values and not the people. This speech is the answer to those who currently proclaim to represent a twisted idea of “Western values”. The following reading is from the Harper & Row, Publishers print from 1978.
