Now, there could be a variety of reasons as to why this is so. For me, it's simple: Teofimo Lopez is a racist, and he doesn't sell tickets. Teo's open racism and bigotry were on full display back in October 2024 when he made racist remarks specifically about Foundational Black Americans. The most notable incidents include a delivery of bananas and a watermelon to a Black opponent and the use of racial slurs and comparisons during interviews and social media posts. Teo referred to fellow Black boxers Terence "Bud" Crawford and Gervonta "Tank" Davis as "monkeys," saying, "Whichever monkey wants to get the banana! They say they are gorillas, I'm a lion, I eat them". In February 2025, a package containing bananas and a watermelon was delivered to the hotel room of Keyshawn Davis. While initially anonymous, Lopez later implied he was responsible by posting a video of himself eating a banana on social media. This act was widely condemned, including by his promoter, Top Rank. It got so bad that WBO president Gustavo Olivieri launched an investigation into Teofimo Lopez’s open contempt and racist comments about black fighters. Then, to add insult to injury, Teofimo isn't a ticket seller, and he's not a draw within his own Hispanic community. Teofimo's lineage is from Honduras. In the 2016 Rio Olympics, Teofimo chose to fight for Honduras, honoring his racist Pappy, Teo Sr, and Mammy. In the past, Teo has only fought in small venues like the Hulu Theater, Michelob Ultra Arena, Resorts World Las Vegas, James L. Knight Center, MGM National Harbor, and other small venues. As for Shakur Stevenson, he openly takes up for racists like Teofimo on platforms like the Breakfast Club. One minute you're black, the next minute you're not. Shakur openly talks down on old school fighters by saying dumb sh*t. After his fight with Edwin De Los Santos, Shakur said f**k the fans who criticized his performance. Shakur ran for his life in that fight, and fans haven't forgotten about it. Although Shakur performed better against William Zepeda. His personality is something some boxing fans can't accept. Corporate Sponsors don't want to take a chance on an open racist like Teofimo Hopez, and a perceived boring fighter like Shakur. This is the reason why sponsors don't want to sponsor this fight.
