Žegar in My Heart

The village of Žegar in northern Dalmatia, beneath the Velebit mountain and on the Zrmanja river, had about 2000 inhabitants before the war. Today, there are around 200, and this number increases only in summer, when many come to check up on their homesteads or visit relatives. One summer, the idea was born to rebuild the building once built through the volunteer work of the inhabitants, which had been destroyed in the war and so shared the fate of the village and its residents. This building will soon house the youth community center – a place for gatherings and events that all residents are looking forward to. It is not enough just to rebuild houses – you have to rebuild social life, too, says Miloš Ušljebrka, a young architect and one of the founders of the Žegar u srcu Association.
