Qatar is the country with the most arms imports in 2022, as shown in this Statista animation based on data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). The small emirate even leaves behind giant India and Ukraine, which has been regularly supported with arms deliveries by an international alliance since the Russian war of aggression began last year. The list of the world's largest arms importers changes significantly from year to year. In 1970, for example, Egypt imported the most weapons, followed by the Federal Republic of Germany. In 1980, Japan topped the ranking, and in 1990, India was in first place. The country also leads in 2020 and is in second position in 2022. India is arming itself because of its rivalry with Pakistan, and China is also increasingly perceived as a threat. Germany is also supplying weapons to India. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius is currently aggressively promoting closer military cooperation in India. He even wants to treat the country like a NATO partner when it comes to arms exports. The current leader, Qatar, is currently also massively rearming and will be ahead in 2022. Qatar's military spending exceeded 6 percent of gross domestic product in both 2021 and 2022. According to observers, the country is caught between the powerful Saudi Arabia in the west and Iran in the east, which repeatedly causes tensions in the Arab world. Germany is also one of the countries supplying weapons to Qatar. This has been widely criticized because, according to media reports, the desert state is a friend of both the USA and the Taliban, Al-Qaeda, the Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas, and also provides financial support to Islamist groups. The SIPRI Trend Indicator Value, or TIV, assigns a value to each weapons system. The values are based on, among other things, size and various performance characteristics such as weight, speed, range and payload, type of electronics, and many other factors. SIPRI then uses the values to offset all weapon transfers and obtain an overall indicator of the magnitude of the transfers, regardless of the financial value of the weapons.
