Restoring a 1975 Ducati 750 Super Sport (Part 2) - Back to Classics

Restoring a 1975 Ducati 750 Super Sport phase 2 - Back to Classics We have reached the end of the second restoration phase of our 1975 Ducati 750 Super Sport project. In this episode we cover the complete disassembly, cleaning, inspection and assessment of the complete bike; from the front brake to the crankshaft. When restoring a classic Ducati, we have 6 distinct phases that we're going through: Phase 1 – Frame & Bodywork With the bike still together and (in some cases) running, we have the opportunity to see what needs extra attention in the build and whether the frame and wheels are straight or need alignment. In this phase we also restore and weld the frame if necessary to have all lugs and brackets in the right place. We then test-fit the bodywork so that it will fit without problem in the assembly stage. Phase 2 – Disassembly & Inspection We then dismantle the bike up to the last single nut and bolt. In this phase, all the necessary decisions can be made based on the judgement of each part while we disassemble the bike. A full list of parts needed for the job as well as an estimate about the workload for the project can be made in this stage. Phase 3 – Third Party Work Once we have judged all parts and have decided with you on the further restoration, we ship out parts to our carefully selected third party suppliers for chroming, polishing, painting and (wet)blasting. Phase 4 – Engine Rebuild With all the parts back in our workshop, we start with the engine assembly as discussed in phase 2. If the cylinders need re-lining and/or boring and honing, this is done first along with the placement of new valve seats and guides if necessary. We will then rebuild the crankshaft using our developed methods and parts. Next, the crankcases are prepared and usually new bearing are fitted. The gearbox and crankshaft are then shimmed and test-fitted before we close the crankcase. The distribution is the next job, after which the cylinders and pistons are assembled and the cylinder heads are assembled and adjusted. Phase 5 – Motorcycle Rebuild The newly build engine is fitted to the frame and the front fork and rear suspension are fitted after rebuilding. We then put the bike on its newly build and/or painted wheels before we move on the fit the wiring and electrical components before moving to fitting the bodywork parts, exhausts, fairing and seats. Phase 6 – Testing & Adjusting The first start-up is always a special moment in any restoration. Depending on the model and the work done to the engine, we test-drive the bike to make sure everything is in 100% condition. Of course, any adjustment needed will be made until the classic Ducati comes through our quality test on all levels.
