Welcome to another Motown Monday! William "Smokey" Robinson was born February 19, 1940 in Detroit, Michigan. As a child, he met a young Aretha Franklin when he was five. He learned to love music he heard on the radio and began singing along, joining a succession of vocal groups the last being The Matadors in 1958. It was this group that got signed to End Records by Berry Gordy and released their first single "Got A Job" an answer song to the then popular Silhouettes single "Get A Job". Then Berry signed them to his Tamla Records, which would be renamed Motown a few years later. They were the first act to be signed to the label and helped to define the Motown sound. Berry was impressed by Smokey's vocal abilities and his immense talent in writing songs he proved by presenting a book of his 100 compositions he wrote while still in high school. One of them "Shop Around" was Motown's first million selling single. Robinson went on to produce 26 top 40 hits for the Miracles and a raft of hit singles for other Motown artists up to 1966. Even the Beatles loved him and recorded "You Really Got A Hold On Me". Supplanted by the Holland Dozier Holland writing team, he then decided to spend more time off the road and became Vice President of Motown Records that kept him busy. One song from the Miracles, the #1 hit "The Tears Of A Clown" in 1970 prompted him to stay with the group until 1972, but did not have a hit until 1974's "Baby Come Close", followed by the #26 pop hit "Baby, That's Backatcha" in 1975. His second career took off at the end of the 70's with the #4 smash hit "Cruisin'" a lovingly constructed song that recalled the great ballads of classic Motown. His biggest solo hit followed in 1981 with the #2 "Being With You" that spent five weeks at #1 on the R&B chart. Revitalized, in 1987 he released "One Heartbeat" with the first single issued being "Just To See Her" peaking at #8, and followed up by the #10 single "One Heartbeat" that was his last Top 40 hit. "Just To See Her" won Smokey his first Grammy. He was also inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame that same year. The following year he left Motown when the label was sold to MCA Records. He did return for a 1999 album, but left again in 2003. He kept in the public eye sporadically releasing albums throughout the new millennium, with "Make It Better" where he guested on Anderson Paak's 2019 album "Ventura". Smokey's trademark soul drenched falsetto covered an impressive three octaves. Critics have also suggested that is a soprano because his vocal delivery is so much more than just a falsetto. No one has ever come close to repeating his sound and probably there will never be another, it is that distinctive and uniquely pleasing. Smokey still tours to this day.
