In the intriguing #MeToo drama After the Hunt, we follow Yale professor Alma (brilliantly portrayed by Julia Roberts), her close friend and colleague Hank (Andrew Garfield), and Alma’s promising student Maggie (Ayo Edebiri). The film reaches a boiling point when Maggie tells Alma that Hank raped her while drunk — a claim Hank vehemently denies. Director Luca Guadagnino (Call Me By Your Name, Challengers) seems entirely uninterested in what exactly happened between Maggie and Hank. In After the Hunt, he primarily explores how everyone deals with the accusation. Guadagnino even chose not to tell his actors whether Maggie was telling the truth or Hank. At the recent Venice Film Festival, VPRO Cinema interviewed the director and his three lead actors. Julia Roberts: “We all asked Luca what really happened in that moment, but he would say: ‘I’m not going to tell you.’ I think it’s wonderful when a director creates that kind of tension.
