Zazi iZandi Programme

Zazi iZandi is an innovative, play-based early literacy programme designed to strengthen phonics, phonemic awareness, and early reading skills for Grade R and Grade 1 learners. Developed by the Binding Constraints Lab (BCL) and delivered in partnership with Masinyusane and The Learning Trust, the programme helps young learners build strong foundations through simple, engaging sound and letter activities. In this video, we highlight how Zazi iZandi works in classrooms, community learning spaces and the role of trained teaching assistants and youth facilitators who bring the programme to life. Through structured play, repetition, and learner-friendly activities, Zazi iZandi supports children to identify sounds, blend and segment words, and grow confident as beginner readers.
