A cosmetic surgeon is trained specifically to perform a variety of cosmetic procedures while a plastic surgeon is mainly trained to work with the hands, perform reconstructive surgery, and work with burn patients. Despite these differences in training, any doctor is technically allowed by law to perform cosmetic procedures. This means a gynecologist could be giving breast implants out of a spa, even though they aren't properly trained for that procedure. In California, the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery has recently been given the authority to approve surgeons for plastic and cosmetic surgeries. Consumers can go online to look at a list of all surgeons and their certifications. This allows them to make an educated decision on which surgeon is approved for the type of procedure they want to have. This will stand in the way of many plastic surgeons doing more extensive cosmetic procedures, but this is only because cosmetic surgeons are better trained for these procedures. All consumers should ensure that their chosen plastic or cosmetic surgeons are certified by the appropriate boards. This will prevent many of the mistakes that are made by doctors performing procedures they are not qualified to perform. Cars are taken to different shops for bodywork than for oil changes and the same distinction should be made between cosmetic and plastic surgeons.
