Contact me directly for pricing, availability, trades, or consignments: 👉 Davida@chicagomusicexchange.com Welcome back to another episode of Prowling Around at Chicago Music Exchange. We’re starting the day down in the catacombs, running on no voice, high Bears emotions, and a whole lot of guitars. From Murphy Lab Les Pauls and Atkin acoustics to Gretsch Masterbuilt and vintage Epiphone pieces, this episode covers a lot of ground. We kick things off with some killer Gibson Murphy Lab guitars, including a Light Aged 1960 Les Paul reissue with a P-90 configuration and a Heavy Aged Goldtop that absolutely nails the look and feel. From there, we dive into one of my favorite modern acoustic builders, Atkin Guitars out of Canterbury, England, and talk about what makes their instruments sound so wide-open and vintage right out of the case. You’ll also see a Gretsch Masterbuilt Firebird Jet, built by the legendary Stephen Stern, along with a unique 2017 Gibson Les Paul Custom in cartridge brass. We head into the acoustic room to check out a vintage 1966 Epiphone Texan FT-79, talk humidification, and spend time with some outstanding Murphy Lab acoustics, including a 1957 SJ-200 that completely defies the “gentle giant” stereotype. And then… we get to the joke. The guitar nobody would ever use — except that it somehow shows up on some of the greatest records of all time. The Epiphone Inspired by Gibson MandoBird. A ridiculous, overlooked, novelty-looking instrument that somehow made its way onto legendary recordings from AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Michael Jackson, Judas Priest, Pantera, and more. It’s a little bit tongue-in-cheek, a little bit conspiracy theory, and very much a Prowling Around moment.
