On December 14, 1973, the Disney movie, Superdad, starring Bob Crane, was released in theaters. It is a campy, comedic film made in the same light as other 1970s Disney flicks, such as Escape to Witch Mountain, The Apple Dumpling Gang, Herbie the Love Bug, and The Shaggy DA. The premise is simple: Dad doesn't like the surfer fellow with whom his daughter is smitten, so he tries to "fit in" with the gang to keep an eye on her. It's a classic "fish-out-of-water" tale, and while it did not receive rave reviews at the box office, it is a fun family film. Bob portrays the lead character, Charlie McCready, who is consumed with worry over his daughter's selection of a boyfriend, Bart, who is played by a very young Kurt Russell. Also starring in the film are Barbara Rush, Dick Van Patten, Joe Flynn, and Kathleen Cody. Shortly after the film's release, Bob Crane gave a brief interview with Hollywood reporter Dick Strout about his role in the movie and as a father. Bob Crane prided himself on being a good father, and it was for the sake of his children that he made the commitment to overcome his addiction.
