The Kundum Festival is an annual celebration by the Ahanta and Nzema peoples of Ghana's Western Region, marking the harvest season and honoring ancestral spirits. The Kundum starts on Sunday and ends on Sunday Kundum Festival is a traditional festival celebrated by the Ahanta and Nzema people of the Western Region of Ghana. It is one of the oldest known festivals in the region, with roots dating back over 200 years. The major components comprise of drumming, dancing to expel evil spirits, ensuring community prosperity and feasting in gratitude for food abundance. The Kundum Festival is particularly well known for its spiritual and communal significance, as well as its unique rituals and practices which celebrate the agricultural season and the natural spirits. The origins of Kundum are mythological. According to oral tradition, the festival began when a hunter named Akpoley from Aboade, an Nzema village, observed a dance performed by dwarfs in the forest. He was captivated by their unique rhythm and movement, which he then shared with his village. Kundum family brought Kundum from Aboade to Axim and later spread to whole of Nzema land. This dance would eventually become an essential part of the Kundum Festival. Kundum, meaning “harvest dance,” was initially associated with giving thanks for a bountiful harvest and to mark the end of the farming season. It was believed that performing the Kundum rituals would drive away evil spirits and misfortunes, bringing prosperity to the community. The festival is a celebration of the harvest, thanking God for an abundance of food, and a time to honour ancestral spirits. It is a time for community bonding, cultural expression, and spiritual renewal. The festival involves several rituals, including the pouring of libation, the beating of drums, and the performance of traditional dances.
