This is a beginner exercise for learning oil paints. By using the indirect painting method we carefully paint in a grayscale, preserving the underlying drawing, building a closed grisaille layer and creating a sphere that feels realistic in it's environment. This is the complete first layer and is what I highly recommend for all middle school artists who are taking their art very seriously. The take away from this exercise is an understanding of mixing values, palette management, understanding how to control the paint and building layers to create amazing artwork. The dark value consists of Ultramarine Blue and Cadmium Red Medium. Please note that Cadmium Red is a slow drying paint. This first layer took 1 week to dry, not the 2-3 days I expected. Use Burnt Umber or Burnt Sienna instead of Cadmium Red for decreased drying time. Learn more at https://BayAreaArtSchool.com
