SOUNDBITE (English) Dr Amir Khalil of Four Paws. “The problem with her (Noor Jahan) joint is arthritis. She has swelling in the genital part. She can barely move. We see skin spots, could be a fungal or parasite infection on her skin, but the situation is getting worse every day. Tomorrow we will have the opportunity with special preparation. (It’s) important to prepare the elephant tomorrow not to fall down because we consider if the elephant is darted and falls down, she will never stand up again.” 9. I hope that tomorrow will stay with us in the good 50 side and the elephant will stand again, and will continue a better life and improve its condition. But the chance I want to say it’s really 50-50. It’s not easy situation. I think it’s a big teamwork in progress tomorrow. With the help of this holiday, I think tomorrow we will be, I hope we will be on the good 50 side and we will have good news for you tomorrow.” 12. Various shots of elephants in their enclosure 13. Wide exterior of the Elephant House in Karachi Zoo STORYLINE: Foreign vets visited a sickly elephant at a southern Pakistani zoo Tuesday amid widespread concern over her well-being and living conditions, with one of the veterinarians saying her chances of survival are unclear. Noor Jehan, 17, was brought to Karachi with three other elephants more than a dozen years ago. Videos of her with her head against a tree and struggling to stand have caused alarm in Pakistan. Noor Jehan was previously highlighted by international veterinarians in 2021 and 2022. The veterinarians, from Austria and Egypt, say Noor Jehan is currently suffering from arthritis, among other health issues. Her joints are causing her enormous pain, according to Dr. Amir Khalil, who examined the elephant. “Our biggest worry is to ensure that the elephant does not fall down,” he said. “If that happens, we fear she will never stand up again.” He rated her chances of survival as 50-50, saying she is visibly distressed and has had mobility issues for the last three weeks. Noor Jehan’s injury could have been the result of an accident, or a fight or collision between the elephants, said Khalil. He welcomed the zoo’s “strategic decision” to move her to a better place in the future. Two senior veterinarians from Austria are expected to join the team Wednesday, when the elephant is due to have surgery. She will undergo an endoscopy and x-ray to determine the extent of her health issues. She and her sister Madhubala have been confined to small barren cement cages since May 2010, according to rights activist Mahera Omar, who is co-founder of the Pakistan Animal Welfare Society.
