November 2, 2024, at 7:00 PM, at the Meridian Arts Center, North York. From the streets of Hong Kong to the plains of Ukraine, and to the human rights struggles in China, this concert brings together the oppressed across the globe. LYRICS TRANSLATIONS 1) Рідна мати моя / My dear mother Music: Platon Maiboroda My dear mother, you endured sleepless nights, And took me to the fields at the edge of the village, You saw me off on a long journey, And gave me an embroidered kerchief that you made. You saw me off on a long journey, And gave me an embroidered kerchief for fortune and for luck. Let a dewy path bloom on it, Green fields, and nightingale groves, And your faithful, motherly, caressing smile, And your sad, kind eyes. And your faithful, motherly, caressing smile, And your sad, kind, blue eyes. I'll take that kerchief, and lay it out like fate, In the quiet rustling of grasses, in the birdsong of oak woods, And on that kerchief, will come alive everything familiar, so real that it hurts, Childhood, parting, and faithful love, And on that kerchief, will come alive everything familiar, so real that it hurts, Childhood, and parting, and your motherly love. 2) Ой де ти підеш / Oh where will you go Music: Leopold Yashchenko Oh where will you go, where will you travel, My darling one, away from me? -Not far, my heart, I'll come back to you. -Oh, so you say, so you tell me, So that I would not miss you. But I will miss you, so much I won't survive, Because I loved you so faithfully. 3) Чорнії брови / Beautiful Brown Eyes Black eyebrows, brown eyes. Dark like the night, bright like the day. Oh those eyes, those girlish eyes, Where did you learn how to drive people mad? You are not here, but it seems that you are, Shining into my soul, like two stars. Are you filled with some kind of poison, Or or maybe you are truly sorcerers? Black eyebrows, brown eyes! I’m scared to look into you, - I won't sleep, day or night, Constantly I’ll think only of you!.. 4) Дивлюсь я на небо / I look at the sky Music: Ludmyla Aleksandrova / Vladislav Zaremba I look at the sky and think: Why am I not a falcon, why do I not fly? Why didn’t you give me wings, oh God? I would have left this earth and ascended to heaven. Far away, beyond the clouds, away from the world, To look for my fate, embracing sorrow, And ask the stars and the sun for mercy, To drown all the sorrow in their light. In love with trouble, I find no welcome And bitterly, and idly I shorten my life, And in this sorrow I understand, that only one thing - The far away heaven - is my homeland. If I only had wings, those eagle’s wings, I would leave the earth, and to my new home Like a swift-winged hawk, I would rise to the sky And loose myself far from the world, to the sky! 5) Прилинь, прилинь / Embrace, oh embrace me (Oksana’s aria from the opera Zaporozhets beyond the Danube) Music: Semen Hulak-Artemovsky Embrace, oh embrace me, my kozak, You are my beloved, I have waited a long time for you. I love, and my heart sinks heavy with sorrow Oh, in this foreign land. My eagle, my grey feathered friend, wrap your wings around me, We will run away to a joyful, famed land on the Dnipro river. There, we will weave a nest. There no one, my beloved, will ever separate us again!
