At first glance I thought Charlene was a Gould's wattled bat but once I arrived home and consulted my bat book, I discovered that she is a Chocolate wattled bat. On the third check with the bat book we worked out that Charlene is a Little Bentwing microbat. Phew All bat species can carry what we call 'bat flies' and there are two species that are found on microbats. Although harmless to humans, Charlene has a reasonable bat fly load that I am attempting to remove as they are blood suckers. Microbats are incredibly important to help maintain a healthy environment as they consume tonnes of pest insects such as mosquitoes, moths, flying termites, cockroaches, bugs, beetles etc According to a WHO Malaria Report, there were 212 million new cases of malaria worldwide in 2015 with an estimated 429 000 malaria deaths the same year. The more microbats in an area, the less mosquitoes and other pests and that equates to lower pesticide usage which is great for both humans and animals. www.facebook.com/BatzillatheBat/
