In the summer of 1965, when I was 14 years old I rode my bike to A&A Hobbies on 28th Street in Fort Worth. While I was there, Archie told me he had something he thought I would like. He got on a ladder and pulled down a Westlake clockwork submarine kit. It caught my interest, but the $24.99 price shocked me. Over the next week I got up early, tied the mower to my bike and mowed yards for a dollar or two until I had made $30. I quickly rode to the hobby shop and presented Archie the $30.00... since I had forgot about tax... we had to negotiate. Soon I was riding home with my fruits of a lot of work and sweat. Over the next week I carefully built the submarine, carefully following the instructions. In August of 1965 at Lake Amon G. Carter, in Bowie, Texas she made her first voyages. (Notice the swivel on the rudder. There was no way that I was going to loose this expensive model.) Jump forward to April 21st, 2019... 54 years later, Bruce and I launch the sub for more successful missions in Sean Merchant's beautiful pool. Notice that today's kids as great as they are, are not interested or impressed. They do not make great toys like this anymore. Enjoy!!! Neil
