Air Quality Index (AQI) is a measure of the harmfulness of the concentrations of different pollutants in the air. Higher AQI scores are more harmful. It is a composite score, looking at different substances: 1. PM2.5: Particulate matter less than 2.5um in size. Particles this small are able to enter the lungs and bloodstream causing serious health issues with the lungs and heart. Exposure can lead to the development of chronic respiratory diseases (long-term). Sources of PM2.5. PM2.5 comes from vehicle combustions, forest fires, power plant emissions - particularly those involving coal burning. 2. PM10: Particulate matter less than 10um but greater than 2.5um in size. These particles cause eye and throat irritation. 3. NO2, CO, O3 (ground level ozone), SO2, and more. AQI is reported in ug/m3 (micrograms per cubic meter of air). Looking at the raw values isn’t too helpful as we need to factor in the toxicity data. Example: a PM2.5 concentration of 113 ug/m3 corresponds with an AQI of 163, and a PM10 concentration of 135 ug/m3 corresponds to an AQI of 134. PM2.5 particles do more damage than PM10 particles. Human hair is 50um in diameter. PM10 is 1/5 the size and PM20 is 1/20 the diameter of a human hair. How do you protect yourself? Certified N95 masks - worn properly - have been confirmed to filter out 95% of particles greater than 0.3 um in size. By wearing an N95 mask correctly, you are reducing your exposure to most PM2.5 particles by at least 95% (only getting 1/20th the exposure).
