Bodhana - A unique approach to learning Carnatic Music by Smt. Seetha Rajan

The Bodhana system is a unique and appealing system of learning Carnatic music formulated by Guru Smt. Seetha Rajan. Traditionally, students of Carnatic Music are taught various svara exercises in rāga Māyāmāḷavagauḷa. Following this, a few gītam-s, svarajati-s, jatisvaram-s in different rāga-s are taught before proceeding to the varṇam stage. Many students somehow manage to sing the material, but do not assimilate properly, the svarasthana-s or melodic structure of each rāga. In the Bodhana system, a learner gets introduced to music with svara-s of rāga Mōhanam. The rāga Mōhanam has been chosen as the svara-s are spaced out and easy to sing for a beginner. Once the students become familiar with Mōhanam, they are introduced to various other pentatonic scales like Gambhīranāṭa, Hindōḷam, Rēvagupti and Amṛtavarṣiṇi. In this way, the learners are introduced to all the 12 svarasthānā-s that we use in Carnatic Music. In each rāga, the students are taught various svara exercises and side by side they learn simple songs, nāmāvaḷi-s and gīta-s. Our Guru has also composed jatisvaram-s and varṇam-s in these rāga-s, so a learner gets a complete picture of each rāga by learning these compositions. In the Bodhana system, three main aspects are emphasised - śruti śuddha, laya śuddha and vāk śuddha. Each rāga is taught for a considerable period of time, so the students understand the svarasthānā-s well, before moving on to the next raga.
