Self-mortification is an essential part of the Catholic spiritual life, but if we separated mortification from an equally rigorous prayer life we risk glorifying ourselves and not glorifying our Heavenly Father. While it's good to take care our physical-self, we have to keep in mind what is the end we are hoping to achieve. Ultimately, the goal of mortification ought to be re-orienting hearts towards God.
