Discover the remarkable journey of Fulwell Windmill, a historic landmark in the North East of England, from its 19th-century origins to its current status as a unique working windmill. Built for Joseph Swan in 1806, Fulwell Windmill stands proudly, constructed from local magnesian limestone. This Grade II* listed vaulted tower mill is not just a local icon; it holds the unique distinction of being the only working windmill in the North East and the only one in the UK featuring a stone reefing stage, a rare design element peculiar to mills in this region. The mill's operational life saw it grinding grain and flour. Its history includes a tragic event in 1834 when journeyman miller William Wren lost his life during a storm whilst repairing a sail. By 1879, the Moody family took over operations, continuing until 1949. Around 1900, a gas engine was installed, and by 1949, the sails were removed, with the engine powering the mill for animal feed production for the next half-century. The last miller retired in 1949, leading to the mill's closure and subsequent deterioration. Early preservation efforts began in 1955 when Sunderland Corporation repaired the cap and fitted four dummy sails. Further restoration occurred in the 1970s by the Tyne and Wear Industrial Monuments Trust. A major project led by Sunderland City Council between 1996 and 2001 restored the mill to full working order, thanks to funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, European Development Fund, and Council funding. Despite these efforts, severe storms in 2011 and 2015 damaged the sails and cap, placing the mill on the Historic England Heritage at Risk Register. A comprehensive restoration, completed in 2018, brought this magnificent structure back to life. This involved meticulous craftsmanship, including redesigned cap, fantail, and sails from new oak and Douglas fir, whilst retaining and repairing original components like the brake wheel and windshaft.
