Fluorescent lamps Fluorescent lamps are a type of gas-discharge light sources whose principle of operation is based on the ability of some substances (luminophors) to glow under UV impact of the electric discharge in gas (usually in argon on in mercury vapour). Fluorescent lamps range from 8 to 150 W and are categorised by lighting colour tones depending on the luminophor composition: DL for daylight, WL for white light, CWL for cold white light and WWL for warm white light. Numbers after the lamp's alphabetic code denote its power level. For instance, CWL-20 is the designation of a fluorescent cold white light 20-watt lamp. Compared to incandescent bulbs, fluorescent lamps are more cost-effective due to their 7-8x better luminous efficiency, longer service life (up to several thousands of hours), and provide softer diffused light that is less blinding and reduces eye fatigue. Fluorescent lamps' light is similar to daylight and enables colour distinction to the same extent as natural lighting does. Shortcomings of fluorescent lamps include their relative bulkiness, the need in a special start-regulating device, presence of stroboscopic effect and sensitivity to ambient temperature. For example, such lamps may fail to light up at ambient temperature below +10 °С. If switched on without protective capacitors, fluorescent lamps are also a source of interference noise for radios and TV sets. Despite these drawbacks, however, fluorescent lamps are the most advanced light sources. In everyday life, mainly lamps with power levels from 13 to 65 W are becoming increasingly wide-spread in wall and table lamps and chandeliers.
