New Frontiers in Optical Coatings

Speaker: Carmen Menoni, RISE Hub Director (Colorado State University) Advances in high-power lasers needed for applications such as inertial confinement fusion and particle accelerators demand major innovations in optical coatings. Similarly, enhancing the sensitivity of gravitational-wave detectors depends, in part, on amorphous oxide coatings that reduce thermal noise. I will describe the strategies for synthesizing amorphous oxides, the models that guide material selection, and the engineering of dielectric multilayers being pursued to enhance performance.
