With the help of Soul Bear and Norman Field I have managed to get this 1959 MSS Record Lathe up and running - though there is still a lot to do. For the Walthamstow Arts Trail we are inviting people to come and record their messages, poems, music etc. onto records that they can take away. In getting ready I have been testing on 8 inch polycarbonate squares. The next task is to cut the squares into circles; which I think wont be too difficult with some kind of cutting compass. I am spraying the polycarbonate with WD40, an old technique for helping to keep the cutting stylus on the surface of the disc. Without the WD40 there is a lot more cracking noises on the playback. Also applying a bit of heat with a hot lamp bulb (the sort of bulb that is used to keep reptiles hot) to make the polycarbonate softer, though I am not sure how much difference it makes. The cutting stylus is Steel and made by Norman Field. Therefore I am embossing and not cutting. A few weights are added to the cutting head to add more force (95g in total). I have angled the head back a little (6 degrees), but that the most I can do with an MSS head. Another thing to do next is to add a motor than enables run in and run out grooves. Soul Bear has helped me the buying of the motor and controller, but not installed it yet; but soon. After it si done, I am carefully washing off the WD40 with washing up liquid and water. the result a record you can dance to! Song is by Dom and Me.
