Part 1: • THE TRUTH ABOUT PEACE CORPS [Part 1] // Mo... Part 3: • THE TRUTH ABOUT PEACE CORPS [Part 3] // Mo... The Important Stuff: I want to make it very clear that we do not view ourselves (nor do we strive to be) "saviors". We are not here to "save the Africans" (because that's racist and frankly, they don't need our "saving"). Our goal isn't to come into these communities and push our agendas or tell people how to live their lives. We are merely working together (and combining resources) to better people's lives. Communities must request a Peace Corps volunteer - one is not forced upon them. We complete a three-month-long intensive community needs assessment and get an in-depth picture of where we fit into the community. We also ask the community what they need and want before ever starting a project. Unlike short-term "voluntourism" trips, we call these places home for 2+ years and truly become members of the family. In no way do I want to promote colonialism, imperialism, or the "white savior" mentality. Lastly, life in the villages isn't "bad" or "boring" or "destitute". The only reason some volunteers find life here challenging is because it is so different from what we are used to.
