Summary of the movie Marumagal is that Ramaiah (B. R. Panthulu) and Kistaiah (D. Balasubramanyam) are close friends, who work as farmers. Ramaiah's family includes his wife Sugunamma (Rushyendramani), their two sons Sundar (Amarnath) and Kumar (N. T. Rama Rao), as well as a daughter Rupa (Surabhi Balasaraswathi), all of whom are struggling to meet their daily needs. Following Kistaiah's advice, Ramaiah ventures into a small contracting business in the town, for which Kistaiah secures funds by mortgaging his wife's jewelry. At this point, Ramaiah relocates to the town, repays the debt, and agrees to arrange a marriage between Kistaiah's daughter Usha (Padmini) and Kumar. Meanwhile, Ramaiah's sons move to the town for their education, where Ammalakkalu taunts Usha, inciting Kistaiah's anger, prompting him to enroll Usha in the same school. As time passes, Kumar and Usha develop feelings for one another. Currently, Ramaiah is preparing to marry off his elder son Sundar to a difficult woman named Shanta (Lalitha). During the wedding festivities, Ammalakkalu provokes Sugunamma, leading her to insult Kistaiah's wife and causing a rift between the families. In a fit of anger, Kistaiah storms out of the venue and breaks the engagement of Usha and Kumar. Consequently, they decide to have a registered marriage, and compassionate Ramaiah welcomes the couple into their home. However, Sugunamma and Shanta remain distant toward Usha. In this difficult situation, Kumar departs overseas for advanced studies while Usha faces numerous challenges in her in-law's household.
