Lecture: "Blockchain for Science" by Sönke Bartling

On January 31, 2018, Sönke Bartling gave a talk on "Blockchain for Science - New Opportunities Ranging from Provable Data, Decentralized Journals and New Funding Mechanisms" at IST Austria. An associate researcher at the Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society in Berlin, Bartling argued that the blockchain revolution offers great potentials for science and knowledge creation. Data acquisition and post-processing will become immutable and provable to the outside world. Censorship-proof cryptocloud-based journal systems and data repositories will be realized, and research assessment and impact measurement will also become provable. With new funding mechanisms on the horizon, this could be a new dawn for open science. Bartling’s talk was part of a lecture series „New Trends in Scholarly Communication“, initiated by IST Austria and the Austrian Science Fund.
