Infectious disease has been an existential threat, for which scientists have sought new, innovative ways to protect us. However, mammals are often used to make these scientific advances. But is there a way that can speed up the development of life saving medicines and simultaneously reduce the use of mammals? Over the past fifteen years Olivia’s research has had the overarching theme of understanding host pathogen interactions at the molecular and cellular levels, including the development of defences against select agents such as Yersinia pestis, the causative agent of plague, and Burkolderia pseudomallei. Part of her research over the past decade has been focussed around the development of alternative research models that can reduce the number of experimental animals used for research, forming a University spin out company, BioSystems Technology (BST) Ltd, of which she is the co founder and CEO. BST sells alternative research models to the research community and where their models have been adopted there has been up to an 80% reduction in the number of vertebrate animals used. In 2017 Olivia celebrated being announced as a top 50 entrepreneur of global number one university business incubator, SETsquared at the House of Commons. She is also aware that being a woman in two male dominated areas (science and business) gives her with an opportunity to be a strong role model and mentor and to this end she is a STEMnet ambassador and participates in outreach projects with an aim at breaking down gender stereotypes about scientists.
