Box blight, how to prevent box blight, how to stop box blight, buxus sempervirens, boxwood parterre, how to create and maintain a formal garden, plant health #boxblight #boxwood #parterre #topiary #plantdisease Box blight is a fungal disease which affects buxus sempervirens (box) plants. It loves damp, humid, warm poorly ventilated conditions. Here are a range of measure which we might employ to prevent blight getting hold. 1. Keep you pruning tools clean with disinfectant. Sterilise them frequently both during and after pruning. 2. Don't introduce new plants near your boxwood. keep it in quarantine for up to four weeks at a safe distance. 3. Locate your boxwood plants in a light, well ventilated airy space. 4. Water from the base not the top in order to keep the plant as dry as possible. 5. Use an absorbent mulch to prevent splash back to the underside of the leaves. 6. Don't prune too often, keep an open airy habit rather than a tightly clipped dense bush. Only once a year preferably. 7. Prune the top of the hedge into a dome shape to encourage water/rain run off away from the plant rather than a concave shape which encourages run off into the centre. 8. Remove all pruning and fallen leaves immediately as they may encourage damp and fungus at the base. 9. Rather than repair holes in hedges with imported plants take cuttings and propagate on site. 10. Design your parterre or garden scheme with ventilation in mind. 11. Avoid human contact, brushing past can agitate and spread the fungal spores. 12. have breaks in hedges to prevent continuous spread. like a fire break. 13. remove and destroy and suspicious or diseased plants. 14. Feed at the base. Enough but not too much.. 15. Feed after pruning to aid recovery from pruning damage. 16. Don't prune in wet conditions. It may agitate the spores and allow them to spread through the damp humidity. Prune on a dry day. 17. Consider an alternative to box plants. 18. Faulkner is more resistant to box blight.
