(27 Mar 1996) Russian/Nat Chechen and Russian refugees continue to stream out of villages throughout the war-torn republic as Russian forces attack what they call rebel strongholds. Just across the Chechen border in Ingushetia, Sleptsovsk hospital has been dealing with most of the injured civilians, many of whom say the Russian army deliberately fired at them despite their waving white flags. Since the fighting began almost two weeks ago around Samashki and Sernovodsk, this hospital in Ingushetia, just across the border from Chechnya, has treated more than 50 refugees. Most of them were injured as they tried to flee the area but some were caught in crossfire as they tried to return to their homes and salvage belongings. 64-year old Assa Seninaroyeva was going back to Samashki when the car she was in was fired on at a check point. SOUNDBITE: (Russian) "I was going home by car to my village when I was wounded at the checkpoint. The two of us were shot. I took one bullet and my daughter was shot in the head." SUPERCAPTION: Assa Seninaroyeva, Wounded woman Sleptsovsk's head doctor said many of the refugees had suffered terrible injuries. SOUNDBITE: (Russian) "The majority have serious wounds from snipers- head wounds, stomach and leg wounds. Their injuries are very serious." SUPER CAPTION: Rosa Korcheva, Head Doctor As the Russian army continues its relentless assault on the Chechen villages, the Sleptsovsk hospital is preparing for more and more casualties. Those who have already been treated despair at their situation. SOUNDBITE: (Russian) "The doctor barely saved my life. How many people have already died? How many refugees are there? People have nothing to eat. " SUPER CAPTION: Aslam Aidamirov, Patient Others in the hospital accuse the Russian army of deliberately firing on them even though they were waving white flags and carrying no arms. All claim that there were no rebel fighters in the towns and that their young men were arrested at Russian checkpoints when they tried to leave. SOUNDBITE:( Russian) Today they are starting to shoot and fight in all villages around here. Where can the people go? Who can they turn to? We just don't know where we can go... SUPER CAPTION: Rosa Khaisbikova, Patient Through her tears, she contemplates her future. But she is one of the lucky ones as the Sleptsovsk Hospital is relatively well-resourced. Regular deliveries by the Red Cross and other aid agencies mean they have at least the necessary medicines to treat the wounded.
