Ballater originated as a small rural settlement in the Middle Ages and expanded rapidly in the 19th century after being developed as a Victorian spa town. Its growth was strongly influenced by the nearby Balmoral estate, which became the Scottish residence of the British royal family in 1852. This royal connection shaped Ballater into a service village closely linked to estate and visitor life. Braemar was formally established in 1795 as a planned village to serve local estates and travellers in the central Highlands. It is best known for the annual Braemar Gathering, one of the oldest Highland games in Scotland, traditionally attended by the British monarch. Despite its small size, Braemar remains one of the highest permanently inhabited villages in the country
