While comparing cast ons for 2x2 rib I ran into internet insanity. Here's my attempt to counter the madness. You absolutely do not need to cable your cable cast on unless it pleases you to do so. You can do the alternating cable cast on by doing 2 knitwise and 2 purlwise (or 3 knitwise and 1 purlwise, or any combination you wish I imagine, though I haven't tried it). You might not want to, you might prefer the alternating cast on (Principles of Knitting by June Hemmons Hiatt p. 408, hard to find online though, which is a right shame) or the tubular cast on.
