Benefits of Adding Borate to your Pool: Sparkling Water & Less Chemical Costs

In this video I will give you an overview of the benefits of adding Borates to your pool water and what an effective level of 30 ppm -50 ppm will achieve. Borate products have been on the market since 1980 but haven't caught on to a greater extent. I hope this video will change that. Here are some of the proven benefits of Borate in the pool water: Lower Chlorine usage - The Borate helps reduce chlorine usage by eliminating Carbon Dioxide and also by keeping the pH stable. pH is stable: The pH won't change much in a pool with Borate in it. So if you have a salt water pool this is a must since the pH tends to rise dramatically. Water is more sparkling: The Borate is more reflective so when the Sun hits the pool the water will really sparkle. Softer and less irritating water: The water feels softer and doesn't burn your eyes Less Algae growth: Either the Boric Acid or less Carbon Dioxide in the water or a combination of both will prevent algae growth. Keeps your Salt Cell clean: Since the pH is more stable the salt cell won't get as much calcium build-up. I show you two products that contain Borates in them. The first is 20 Mule Team Borax which is pure Borax: Sodium Tetraborate Decahydrate. You can add this as the less expensive method but the more time consuming and the more difficult method. In the pool in the video you will need to add about 40-50 lbs to get a Borate level of 30-50 ppm. You will also need to add about 4 gallons of 31% Muriatic Acid to counter the pH jump. You can broadcast it directly in the pool or dump it slowly into the skimmer. It won't clog up the skimmer if you pour it in slowly. Run the pool for 24-48 hours and then test the Borate levels with some Boron Test Strips. Note that if your pool has some stains they may become more pronounced as the pH rises rapidly. So if your pool is stained I wouldn't add Borax like this. For the pool in the video total cost would be about $90 including $20 for the Boron test strips. Not bad but also not a process for new pool owners. The second method is with PoolProof by Nisus. This is a company is the world leader in making Borate products. The PoolProof is the only Borate product that will not raise the pH after adding it to the pool. It is a Hexaborate: Disodium Octaborate Tetrahydrate 47% (Equivalent Boron content: 86% Sodium Tetraborate, 32.3% Boric Oide, 10% Elemental Boron). This is the easy way to add Borates to the pool water for the pool in the video it would take 5 bottles of PoolProof. That is $175.00 plus $20.00 for the Borate test strips = $195.00 So it is about double the price of using the pure Borax but the easier of the two methods. And remember this is a one time application. The savings on chemicals usage over the years will more than make it worth adding Borates to your pool. So if you feel up to it go ahead and try the pure Borax method... or pay the extra $100 and do it the easy way with PoolProof. Also the PoolProof has a pH of 7.0, when diluted it has a pH of 7.6 - so adding PoolProof will not require you to add Muriatic acid to balance out the process.
