"An educated populace is difficult to govern." Throughout history, this has been the secret rule of those in power. By raising the barriers to knowledge, they sought to solidify social hierarchies. This strategy is not merely a ghost of the past; it is a silent, ongoing crisis in our modern classrooms and homes. 1. The Western Example: Priest-Class Monopoly and Latin In Medieval Europe, knowledge was power. At that time, the Bible was recorded only in Latin, and the authority to read and interpret it was held exclusively by the clergy. Weaponized Interpretation: Common people could not read the scriptures for themselves and had to accept the clergy's interpretations as absolute truth. By monopolizing the source of information, the priesthood controlled the public's spiritual and mental lives. The Language Barrier: Individuals like William Tyndale, who sought to liberate knowledge by translating the Bible into the common language, were branded as threats to the establishment and executed. To those in power, the sharing of knowledge meant the inevitable collapse of their authority. 2. Modern Tragedy: Al-Qaeda and the Trap of Illiteracy The catastrophic consequences of withholding knowledge are repeated in modern history. Osama bin Laden and Al-Qaeda were able to use Afghanistan as a base precisely because of the nation’s alarmingly low literacy rates. One-Sided Brainwashing: The Taliban regime banned TV and the internet, allowing only their state-run radio stations to operate. Rule by Radio: For a populace unable to read or verify information independently, the constant propaganda broadcast by religious leaders became absolute doctrine. In the absence of critical thinking, blind obedience and radicalism took root, leading to a global tragedy. 3. An Eastern Revolution: 'Hangeul' Breaks the Barrier A similar struggle occurred in the history of my homeland, Korea. In the 15th century, when King Sejong the Great created 'Hangeul'—the most accessible writing system in the world—the ruling elite were horrified. Opposition to Democratizing Knowledge: They argued that if commoners gained access to knowledge through an easy script, the social order would collapse. Monopolizing complex Chinese characters was the key to maintaining their privilege. However, King Sejong broke this monopoly to give the people the power to read, think, and defend themselves. 4. My Mission as a Sabom: Why We Build "Mind Muscle" History proves that a populace that does not read or question is the easiest to manipulate. The "Dumbing Down" strategy once used by historical tyrants has evolved into modern "Algorithms," which are now stripping our children of their ability to think independently. Today, we see classrooms lacking the "strict teachers" who once corrected wrongdoings, and homes where meaningful dialogue has vanished, let alone proper parenting. This void is being filled by addictive, mindless algorithms. This is the modern form of "Dumbing Down." This is why I believe it is my mission to gather scattered minds and bodies, focus them on a goal, and accumulate the experience of overcoming limits. My goal is to help students build the "Mind Muscle" required to Read, Think, Question, Imagine, Decide, and take Responsibility. Children armed with the foundation of knowledge and the power of imagination will never be trapped by someone else's frame. They will become the true masters of their own lives.
