SOUNDBITE (German) Cardinal Karl Lehmann: "The 115 members of the conclave, coming from all continents, have elected Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger. To them this man of the church, and I think these were the main motives for their choice, represents the living symbol of a continuing acting of the church, based on the Holy Scripture and the daily transmission of traditions that are hundreds of years old, a brave guarantor of the steadiness of faith in all situations, a man that for decades has been famous as a complete theologian." 6. Wide of cardinal facing the press 7. SOUNDBITE: (German) Cardinal Karl Lehmann: "Straight after the election and its acceptance, the new Pope has adopted the name of Benedict XVI. This was a real surprise. In doing so, he ties in to Benedict XV." 8. Close up of cardinal's biretta 9. SOUNDBITE: (German) Cardinal Karl Lehmann: "There is no doubt that the new Pope has chosen this tie very consciously." 10. Various of cardinal's hands 11. SOUNDBITE: (German) Cardinal Karl Lehmann: "It is a good thing that things meet up, especially now 60 years after the end of World War II, we specially refer to the day of the German Capitulation on 8 May. It is a good thing that a German cardinal after so many years, is elected to play the leading part in the church. Many people didn't believe this would be possible at a time when the atrocious events, that set out in Germany in the 20th Century, are still noticeable. STORYLINE: Within hours of the conclave, some German cardinals - delighted about the choice of their countryman, Joseph Ratzinger as the next pope - held a news conference about the appointment. Cardinal Karl Lehmann told reporters on Tuesday night that the new Pope Benedict XVI was elected because he "represents the living symbol of a continuing acting of the church, based on the Holy Scripture and the daily transmission of traditions that are hundreds of years old. Lehmann went on to describe Ratzinger as "a brave guarantor of the steadiness of faith in all situations". With unusual speed and little surprise, Ratzinger became Pope Benedict XVI, a 78-year-old transitional leader who promises to enforce strictly conservative policies for the world's Roman Catholics. Appearing on the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica as dusk fell Tuesday, a red cape over his new white robes, the white-haired Ratzinger called himself "a simple, humble worker." The crowd responded to the 265th pope by waving flags and chanting "Benedict! Benedict!" From Notre Dame in Paris to the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico City, cathedral bells tolled and prayers were offered. Millions watched live television broadcasts of St. Peter's bells pealing at 6:04 p.m. (1604 GMT) and white smoke pouring from the Sistine Chapel's chimney - signs a successor to John Paul II had been chosen. As head of the powerful Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Ratzinger disciplined dissidents, backed John Paul in resisting reforms sought by liberals and urged caution in pursuing relations with other Christian denominations. Coming from a continent where many churches are empty, he has pushed for Europe to rediscover its Christian roots while suggesting that Turkey's bid for membership in the European Union may be incompatible with European culture. Ratzinger went into the conclave a favourite.
