Renault Austral Review: Style Over Substance? The Renault Austral enters the crowded mid-size SUV market with bold styling and hybrid-only powertrains, but does it have what it takes to stand out from the pack? On the outside, the Austral makes a strong first impression. Sharp lines, a large grille, and curved headlights give it a sporty and modern look. The interior continues this theme with a futuristic dashboard dominated by large screens. However, some may find the squared-off steering wheel and multitude of stalks behind it a bit fussy. Under the hood, Renault offers just one powertrain option: a 1.2-liter three-cylinder turbo petrol engine paired with two electric motors. This hybrid setup produces a respectable 200 horsepower and 410 Nm of torque, good for a 0-60 mph time of 8.4 seconds. Fuel economy is a strong point, with Renault claiming 60.1 mpg. On the road, the Austral delivers a mixed bag. The optional 4Control rear-wheel steering system is a standout feature, giving the SUV impressive maneuverability in tight spaces. However, the ride quality disappoints, especially on the larger 20-inch wheels. The firm suspension transmits too many bumps into the cabin, compromising comfort. Inside, the Austral offers decent but not class-leading space. Rear legroom can be tight for adults if the front seats are pushed back, though the sliding rear bench on top trims helps. The boot capacity ranges from 430 to 555 liters depending on the rear seat position – middle of the pack for the segment. Tech-wise, the Austral comes well-equipped. All versions feature a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, 12.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and 9.3-inch head-up display. The Google-based infotainment works well, though some menus can be overly complex. Safety is a strong suit, with the Austral earning a five-star Euro NCAP rating. A comprehensive suite of driver assistance features comes standard across the range. Starting at £34,695, the Austral is priced at the higher end of its segment. While it offers style and technology in spades, competitors like the Kia Sportage and Volkswagen Tiguan provide better overall packages for similar money. Verdict: The Renault Austral brings eye-catching design and clever features like rear-wheel steering to the mid-size SUV class. However, its firm ride and merely average practicality hold it back from true class-leading status. It's worth a look for those prioritizing style, but there are more well-rounded options available. #RenaultAustral2024 #RenaultAustral #RenaultAustralfirstlook #RenaultAustral2024exterior #RenaultAustral2024interior #RenaultAustralwalkaround #RenaultAustraldetails #RenaultAustralnew ➡️ Discover all new cars before anyone else!
