A is for Arab: A Century of Stereotypes October 2, 2013 The husband-and-wife Shaheen duo have spent more than four decades documenting Arab and Muslim stereotypes in US popular culture from the early 20th century to the present, and recently donated more than 3,000 items, including motion pictures, television programs, editorial cartoons, and comic books, to create the Shaheen Archive at NYU's Tamiment Library. This talk discusses the research process as it relates to the resulting publications and the Shaheen Archive and examines Hollywood's Arab and Muslim images: what they are, their impact on opinion and policies, why they exist, and how best to address them in the future. Bernice Shaheen Author, 'BC's Charmed Life' (Independent Publisher, 2013); Researcher on Arab and Muslim Stereotypes in US Popular Culture Jack Shaheen Acclaimed Media Critic and Author, 'Reel Bad Arabs: How Hollywood Vilifies a People' (Olive Branch Press, 2009) and 'A is for Arab: Archiving Stereotypes in US Popular Culture' (Asian Pacific American Institute at NYU, 2012) Sign up to our mailing list to stay informed of upcoming NYU Abu Dhabi Institute events: http://nyuad.nyu.edu/en/news-events/a...
