Rainbow Mountain was closed! During my March 2022 trip to Peru, I had booked a tour to Rainbow Mountain through Inka Explorer Viajes, but on the day of the trip, things took an unexpected turn. The road to Rainbow Mountain had been closed for weeks due to protests, but our tour guide never told us. Instead, we were taken to Palccoyo, a lesser-known but equally colorful mountain. While I wasn't thrilled with the dishonesty, the day turned into one I'll never forget. Here's what made this surprise detour so memorable: A beautiful, uncrowded hike at Palccoyo Stunning rainbow-colored mountain formations Making new friends from California Epic views and unforgettable memories Despite the sketchy tour company, I'm grateful I got to see Palccoyo.
