Ralph Stefan Weir and Ben Watkins debate whether there is a sound argument from mental causation to materialism. The argument goes roughly as follows: Our minds cause bodily movements. Bodily movements are material effects. Every material effect has a sufficient material cause. Bodily movements are not caused twice over by distinct sufficient causes. Therefore, our minds are material and there is no room left for an immaterial soul. Watkins, a materialist, believes that the argument above succeeds. Weir disagrees, arguing that at least one key premise in the causal closure argument for physicalism is unjustified, and that interaction between soul and body is not a serious problem for dualism.
