Heinrich Scheidemann (c. 1595–1663) was one of the leading composers of the North German organ school and a key figure in early Baroque keyboard music. A student of Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, Scheidemann served for most of his life as organist at the Katharinenkirche in Hamburg, where he helped shape the rich tradition of Lutheran organ playing that later influenced composers such as Buxtehude and J. S. Bach. His Magnificat VI toni is a setting based on the sixth church mode (Tone VI), drawn from the traditional chant of the Magnificat, the biblical canticle from the Gospel of Luke. In keeping with 17th-century Lutheran practice, the work was likely intended for alternatim performance, in which verses of the chant sung by a choir alternate with organ verses composed in elaborate polyphonic style. Scheidemann’s writing combines expressive ornamentation, clear contrapuntal lines, echo effects that suit perfectly the characteristics of the organ of the Pieterskerk in Leiden. 00:00 Versus 1 02:36 Versus 2 (auff 2 Clavir pedahl) 11:20 Versus 3 (Pedaliter) 15:10 Versus 4 (manualiter) The video was recorded on 18 October 2025.
