The Sound of Bulgaria’s Kukeri | Veliko Tarnovo Yesterday we experienced one of Bulgaria’s most striking and unforgettable traditions, the Kukeri in Veliko Tarnovo for Sirin Zagovezni. The Kukeri are masked performers dressed in elaborate, often handmade costumes covered in fur, ribbons, and enormous bells. Their role is ancient: to chase away evil spirits and welcome health, fertility, and a fresh start for the coming spring. The sound of the bells isn’t just noise. It’s meant to cleanse, to protect, and to mark the turning of the season. Sirin Zagovezni is the day of forgiveness in the Orthodox calendar, celebrated seven weeks before Easter. In many parts of Bulgaria, Kukeri appear around this time as part of the wider seasonal rituals connected to renewal and protection. Seeing them move through the streets of Veliko Tarnovo, hearing the bells echo against the old stone and hills, felt both ancient and completely alive. It’s one thing to read about traditions, it’s another to stand there and feel the ground shake beneath your feet. We’re a Welsh-Kiwi family living in a small village in Northern Bulgaria. Since moving here full-time in 2023, we’ve been learning about the traditions that shape everyday life, not just the history, but the feeling behind it. Experiences like this remind us why we chose Bulgaria as our home. If you’ve ever witnessed Kukeri before, we’d love to hear your experience. #Kukeri #VelikoTarnovo #BulgarianTraditions #BulgarianCulture #LifeInBulgaria #LivingInBulgaria #DiscoveringBulgaria #BulgarianFolklore #OrthodoxTradition #ExpatLife #movingtobulgaria #bulgaria
