PART 1 OF 2: Sydney Road has been a hub of commerce and culture since the Victorian gold rush of the 1850s, when businesses flourished to supply miners heading north to the goldfields. Many of the hotels along the strip date from that era, and the road itself was originally called Pentridge Road before being renamed Sydney Road in 1859. The forerunner of today's Street Party was first held in the Victoria Street parklands in 1989, as an initiative of the Brunswick Ethnic Communities Council, before moving to Dawson Street the following year. It soon outgrew that space, gradually growing in length until it settled on its iconic stretch of Sydney Road.
